A Growing Music Trend in Movie Trailers

A few years ago after the success of The Dark Knight, it seemed like every new sci-fi/space or comic book movie trailer was replicating that same ominous "bong" sound in their trailer. If you don't remember that sound, although I'm sure you do as it was a point of many jokes for a while, let me remind you with the Inception trailer.

Remember now?

Lately, I've noticed a new trailer trend in these movie genres: take one song and let it play throughout the entire trailer. While music is not a new phenomenon in movie trailers, a few recent movies are using it so much better. I thank Guardians of the Galaxy for this shift. After they drove people to the theater using Blue Suede's "Hooked on a Feeling," it became apparent that the music was much more memorable than the "bongs" that the initial trailer also happened to use.

Since then, comic book and sci-fi movies have ran with this trend, and I'm really fond of it. It helps to set the tone for the movie while getting the audience pumped to see it. Amazingly, they also avoid telling the entire plot of the movie, which is maddening by the way.

One of the more notable examples has to be the trailer to Suicide Squad. If Queen's "Bohemian Rahpsody" didn't help to excite the hell out of you when you watched this trailer, you are dead inside.

And just recently the trailer for Luc Beeson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets released set to the The Beatles' "Because." Although just seeing a glimpse of the new world he has brought to life was plenty stimulating, the music really helped to emphasize the beauty and the feeling of a calm before the storm.

Here are a couple bonus trailers that were able to take one song and set the stage for what the audience could expect.

10 Cloverfield Lane - "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James and the Shondells

Star Trek Beyond - "Sabotage" by The Beastie Boys
